My first ideas for music magazine

The type of magazine which I am aiming for is, 'The Glossy - for music & lifestyle' because it is something I am interested in and I think that music magazines should be more about the lifestyle and fashion of the artist so fans can look up to them properly without reading just about the music which the artist produces. I am thinking of making it quite girly by doing a photo shoot with my friend and saying that she could be the new Pixie Lott. I am going to use quite simple but affective colours. I want it to appeal to boys as well so I don't think I will make it too girly as music is for everyone. I think I will make it glossy and girly but with a rocky glamorous edge.

Planning Notes for College Magazine

For my title I wanted to choose a word which had two meaning but was still relevant to college, I chose 'class' just because it relates to college and it also means class as in classy. Because of this title I chose black and white as my colour scheme for the cover. I also chose a pink colour for additional text and so it could be more appealing to my target audience which is for female students.

I chose quite a girly font which was already in italics and I used that for all the text on the page, I made the title and the "exclusive interview" text diagonal to create more room on the page but also to keep it fun and young. I put the titles all down the left hand side and made sure each title was seperated by a white line. I used the East Norfolk logo and placed it in the bottom corner, I made it pink so it would fit in to the additional information which was also pink.

I chose my model because she is a college student and the day i took the photo she was dressed in a 'classy' way which fitted in to my magazine, I made the image black and white to fit in with the theme of the magazine, I also cropped out the background so it was just her in the image. I made my background colour grey so it would really stand out I also made the level of the contrast higher to make it seem more realisitic..

Music Magazines: Genre & Representation

The main audience for music magazines is men, even though it may have a lot of women readers it looks like it targets men because of the way that they are presented. For example, they will have a male artist on the front standing in a powerful dominant stance. All the colours are mainly male, the font, the articles. There is nothing in there which would interest or benefit women. This is good because most other mainstream magazines target women and there are barely any for men.
Most magazines are the same genre...rock. But music magazines to categorise music magazines so companies make more money and so that they can also categorise artists which makes it easier for the makers and readers.

How magazine publishing has changed over time
Magazines now have to up their game, they have to make they USP even more unique because they have competition with the Internet and other media even though most magazines do have their own websites they still want to make money by people buying their magazines. Also advertising companies may lose out if people stop buying magazines, also things can be found out via google, facebook, twitter and other social networking sites.
In 2010 iPads and iPhones adapted the 'newstand' app where you could buy and read books and magazines this threatened and gave opportunities to publishers.
There was a shift within the audience of magazines, and magazines became more targeted at women than men because women were known for buying more magazines.

What things magazine publishers need to focus on to ensure their future success
There are 5 main obvious things which magazines can do in order to survive and succeed in the future, these are:
  1. Invest in digital initiatives
  2. Keep the company as lean and as efficient as possible
  3. Recruit staff with new media and database skills
  4. Analyse the audience to understand what they want
  5. Develop apps to deliver digital content and services

Audience Research Results

My aim was to find out if people liked the combination of music and fashion..I also wanted to find out what type of music the majority of people listen too was. I was pleased with the results I got, I found that people like music and fashion they were my highest results. I also found that the most music genre listened to was, Indie, Pop and other. This has helped me because it has made my magazine a lot easier to complete now I know what other people think. My question number 7 'Are there any unique features which you would like to see in a magazine?' was quite interesting, someone responded with, 'News on music artist lifestyles (like what they're buying, holidas they're going on) also new releases' This is a big help and I would like to try and include something like this into my magazine. Question number 8 'Is there anything about magazines that you don't like?' was also a big help as well and the most common answer was that they don't like magazines when they are too crammed with words or too fill with advertising, so I am going to try and keep my picture to text ratio equal.
